Lappeenranta’s Christmas market

Hello Everybody! My name is Alisa and I am a student in Lappeenranta School of Business. I have already lived in Lappeenranta for two years!
As you can see from the title, I am going to share my thoughts about Lappeenranta’s Christmas market with you.

My friend Lia and I paid a visit there last Monday. In December, as the days become shorter and shorter, daylight turns into luxury; making a Christmas market like this one a very uplifting venue and experience. Besides it was simply delightful to escape Skinnarila campus and university routine and plunge into this authentic atmosphere of Finnish Christmas.

We had such a pleasant time! Firstly, we were lucky to be on time to hear the choir of children sinning traditional Finnish Christmas songs. I could not resist walking past without taking pictures. Just look at these pretty angels!

At the market, we discovered stores selling local goods: handmade knits, charming decorations, pastries and organic products such as berry jams and juices.

Especially these wreaths made of spruce branches were my favorites. If you are still searching for Christmas presents, this is the place to go!

Hot glögi (mulled wine) with ginger bread were warmly offered to the guests of the market. Neither Lia nor I could refuse this offer :)

Furthermore, charity organizations such as Unicef, Pelastakaa Lapset Ry and Menumat Oy are involved in the event. For example with their assistance, you can donate a Christmas present to underprivileged young people.

The Christmas market is situated in the very ‘heart’ of the city on Kauppakatu, near Armada shopping center. The market is open until the 20th of December. So don’t miss it!

If you’re looking for more winter activities, a great option could be visiting a reindeer farm. Visiting this mini Lapland is designed for small groups of 5-15 people, 20 euros per person (including transportation). At the farm you will be able to meet the reindeer in the peaceful forest ambiance of Karhusjärvi. You can also feed the reindeer lichen whilst enjoying a cup of coffee and reindeer shaped ginger bread cookies. The whole trip lasts 1.5 hours.
