Perch, also known as Perca fluviatilis, are usually 15-30 cm long. Their appearance consists of a green striped body and reddish orange fins, along with sharp scales. Some are however gold in color, which is caused by a lack of dark pigment. It can live up to around 6 years and a perch usually weighs around 50-350 g, but some can weigh up to 1-2 kg.
They live in slowly flowing rivers, deep lakes, ponds and brackish waters in the Baltic sea. It may also move in cold, fast-flowing waters, but will not stay there in order to reproduce. Perch have spread around Europe, and are even the national fish of Finland. They swim around and search for food in swarms. The biggest perches are mainly predators. Perch eat benthic animals and small fishes. They can also eat their own kind.
